Swing Low, Sweet ChariotPosted: September 14, 2015
I was recently a part of a memorial service for Scott, a friend of ours who passed away after a year-long battle with cancer. It was especially tough because he was my age and left behind a wife and two little girls. But he was a strong man of God and inspired many hundreds of people by his faith through this fiery trial (as evidenced by the packed auditorium). Scott was passionate about following Jesus, and was always looking for opportunities to serve others. He approached life with care-free attitude. Every time anyone visited with Scott we came away convicted by his heart, openness, and humor about all the medical challenges he was enduring. He finished the race strong. His friend Dat gave an analogy at his memorial service of the kid in class who finishes the test way before you, even though you thought you were going into the test well-prepared. Maybe it was just that he had figured out the answers.
Scott’s widow Pat requested that we sing the song “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” I thought I would pass along a rehearsal recording I had made in preparation for day, as well as a video of us singing the song. I love the sentiment of this old, old song, with its focus on Christian homecoming. I look forward to being with Scott and my other brothers and sisters who have already crossed over on that day we meet the Lord.
swing low sweet chariot – sheet music – This is what the teaching recording below is based on (although the sheet music doesn’t have the fun optional ending portion you will hear on the teaching recording and on the video).
